- Shouichi discovers Yukina's letter addressed to a man named Tsugami Shouichi (current Sawaki Tetsuya) during his cleaning. So, he takes a trip aboard the Akatsuki-gou ferry to find the man.
- Suddenly, the ferry is caught in a stormy weather. The white cloth Mysterious Young Man appears in front of the entire passengers and warns them about the upcoming danger. Then, He bestows his power within the passengers for the cause.
- The El of Water appears and attacks. The power within Shouichi awakens and transforms him into Agito. In his brief fight against the El of Water, Shouichi is defeated and is knocked into the ocean.
- The El of Water curses the rest of the passengers that death will soon fall upon them if their powers awaken someday.
- Contents of Yukina's letter
- Long ago, there was a battle between the power of Light and Darkness.
- Defeated, the Light side unleashes his power in the hope of humans using it for their future battles against the Darkness. He gazes upon the sky, watching his power scatter across the world as he dies.

- This episode reveals Shouichi's past as well as explains all the mystery of the series. Truly 42 is the answer to life.
- All the Akatsuki-gou members are seen together in the same episode.
- The flashback in this episode reveals the first time Shouichi turns into Agito.
- During Shouichi's first battle against the El of Water on the Akatsuki-gou ferry, he was defeated and was knocked into the ocean. This answer to the questions of why Shouichi was found unconscious on a shore and he suffered from amnesia.
- After cursing the entire passenger, the El of Water lay dormant in Sekiya Masumi which is why it emerged within her on episode 33.
- On the Akatsuki-gou, Kino is reading a book with a Russian title: Modern Medicine - The Human Body.
- Later on, Shouichi asks Kino to take a look at his letter, assuming he knows many languages because he's a doctor. Perhaps Shouichi saw him reading the book with the foreign title.
