Shuriken Sentai Ninninger is the 39th Sentai series. It starts February 22, 2015.

Shuriken are the throwing stars used by ninjas. Ninninger is a portmanteau of "ninja" and "ranger".

Plot

During the Sengoku Era, a wicked and powerful general, Kibaoni Gengetsu, attempted to drown Japan in fear. He was eventually defeated and sealed away by the ancestors of the Igasakis. However, Kibaoni left a worrysome prophecy that he would revive in 444 years, and rule the world in terror once again. The prophecy seemed to turn out to be true, with Kibaoni reviving as an oni, but he was defeated and sealed again once more by the current Igasaki family's grandfather, Igasaki Yoshitaka, earning Yoshitaka the title of "Last Ninja".

However, it turned out that the year 444 years after was wrongly calculated, and 444 years after was actually the current year. When the Igasakis visited Kibaoni's shrine, he was revived by a strange ritual by a wolf-like being, rising up in gigantic form as an oni in a dark blue tornado. Now it is up to the current generation of the Igasakis to stop Kibaoni once again and for all.

Igasaki Takaharu - Nishikawa Shunsuke → 伊賀崎天晴 - 西川俊介

Takaharu's name uses the same kanji as Appare/Splendid. It literally means clear skies which goes along with the weather theme of his family. His family name, Igasaki, is an obvious reference to the famous Iga Ninja Clan.
Aoninger: Blue ninger アオニンジャー

Katou "Cloud" Yakumo - Matsumoto Gaku → 加藤クラウド八雲 - 松本岳

Yakumo literally means 8 clouds or clouds in all directions.
Kininger: Yellow ninger キニンジャー

Matsuo Nagi - Nakamura Kaito → 松尾凪 - 中村嘉惟人

Nagi means lull, calm.
Shironinger: White ninger シロニンジャー

Igasaki Fuuka - Yano Yuuka → 伊賀崎風花 - 矢野優花

Fuuka means flowery wind.
Momoninger: Pink ninger モモニンジャー

Momochi Kasumi - Yamaya Kasumi → 百地霞 - 山谷花純

Momo means pink, but in Momochi, it means "100". So Momochi means 100 lands. Kasumi means mist.
Takaharu and Fuuka's father: 天晴・風花の父

Igasaki Tsumuji - Yashiba Toshihiro → 伊賀崎旋風 - 矢柴俊博

Tsumuji means whirlwind.
Last Ninja: ラストニンジャ

Igasaki Yoshitaka - Sasano Takashi → 伊賀崎好天 - 笹野高史

Yoshitaka means fine weather, similar to Takaharu's given name.

Trivia

2015 is the 40th anniversary of Super Sentai (GoRanger first aired April 5, 1975 (1975-04-05)). It's not the 40th series though, because GoRanger lasted for two years.
- This might be why the Ninninger's naming conventions are similar to GoRanger's (Akaninger and AkaRanger, etc.)
Kibaoni's name means "fanged oni". The monsters of the week are Youkai, which are monsters from Japanese folklore.[1]

Actor Trivia

Yamaya Kasumi was Komaki Rumi of Movie Taisen Ultimatum (Fourze part).
The first Sentai since Gokaiger to not have Oshikawa Yoshifumi do the stunts for the year's Red. And the first Sentai since GekiRanger to not have him doing the stunts for a main ranger.

Ninja Stuff

The last ninja-themed Sentai was 12 years ago with Hurricanger in 2003. And 21 years since Kakuranger in 1994.
The phrase "nin nin" is popularized by the anime character "Ninja Hattori-kun".
- By itself, one "nin" is a homonym for the Japanese word for "to acknowledge".
Ninninger was originally supposed to start February 15th, but because Toqger was preempted a couple of weeks earlier for a news special, Ninnin was pushed back a week.

Their catchphrase "We are shinobi, but we will not hide!" is a reference to "shinobi" being based on the Japanese word for "concealment, to hide" as well as being an alternate way of saying "ninja".
The Igasaki Clan is obviously a reference to the Iga ninja clan. Famous real life ninja.
