Trivia
- In the play where there is a parody of Kenshin. The parody version looks like a kabuki actor with a big frizzy red wig, white face paint, and a scar that's shaped like the kanji for 9/kyuu/九. Consequently, they also parody Kenshin's nickname, Hitokiri Battousai 人きり抜刀斎. Instead, they call him Hitokiri Bakyuusai, 人きり抜九斎. The joke is that the "tou" in Battousai could be represented by the character 十, meaning 10, whereas Bakyuusai's kyu comes from the kanji for 9.
- Misao 操 means "chastity".
- Chou is a sword lover. He visits the Seikuu, the son of the late swordsmith Arai Shakkuu. Chou wants the rumored final sword that Shakkuu made. To do this, Chou kidnaps Iori, Seikuu's son. When Kenshin confronts Chou, Chou implies that part of the reason he has the baby is for a tameshigiri (試し切り) the practice of testing out a new sword on a person.
- Shakkuu's last sword was kept in a box marked Offering (奉納). It was hidden in the shrine near the Arai's home.
- Kenshin's new sword is the Sakabatou Shin'uchi (逆刃刀・真打) which means "reverse blade true performer". Kenshin's old blade was the Sakabatou Kageuchi (逆刃刀・影打) which means "reverse blade shadow performer".
- The inscription on the Sakabatou Shin'uchi reads: "For countless years, I have forged blades that cut myself. Though my son may hate me, this is for my grandson's era." He is talking in a generational sense. He forged many swords that killed his generation, which upset his son's generation but everything was done for the sake of the future generations.
Historical Trivia
- Shishio's sword is named Nagasone Kotetsu. It is named after the famous Edo swordmaker Nagasone Kotetsu. There are many swords in fiction named Kotetsu because of him.
- Misao's grandfather was a part of the secret Oniwaban in Kyoto. The Oniwaban (also known as "spies" or "the garden keepers") were undercover agents for the shogun. Some even call them ninjas.
- Katsu Kaishuu (勝海舟) and Saigou Takamori (西郷隆盛) are named dropped by Misao's grandfather for taking Edo without bloodshed. As a result of this, the secret Oniwaban and the Bakufu never clashed. So Kenshin never fought Aoshi.
- When Chou tells the police that Shishio plans to burn down Kyoto, Kenshin remarks that it's similar to the Ikedaya Incident. A real life incident, where some ronin were planning on setting fire to Kyoto in 1864. They were stopped by the Shinsengumi, whose duties at the time were to police Kyoto.
- Kurojou, Shirojou, Masukami, and Oumime are apparently all names of Noh masks.
Actor Trivia
- Fujiwara Tatsuya (Shishio) is famous for his role as Yagami Light in the Death Note live action movies.
- Yumi is played by Takahashi Maryjun, older sister of actress Takahashi Yu who played Yuri in Kiva.
- Eda Yuka (Masukami). She played Mibu Sayaka in Fourze. Her name is a reference to the Mibu, the origin of the Shinsengumi who were also known as the ronin of Mibu.
- Kamiki Ryunosuke (Soujirou) was the Mysterious Boy (Power of Darkness) in Agito.
