A variation of the Honest Woodcutter fable from Aesop. In the Japanese version, Hermes is often replaced by a goddess or a water sprite.

Plot

In general, the plot revolves around a man dropping an axe or some other tool into a spring or river. A goddess will appear and ask if the man dropped his own tool, or a golden version of that tool. If the man responds honestly, they will be given the gold tool. If the man lies, he will receive neither, losing his own tool as punishment.
