Kaiju

The S-Class Species given to the Giant Unidentified Life Forms that continue to show up in Japan. The kanji for kaiju is "禍威獣" (threatening beasts of calamity). This is a pun on the normal kanji for kaiju which is "怪獣" which means "strange beast" usually.

SSSP

Stands for S-Class Species Suppression Protocol.

In Japanese they're the Science Special Investigations Squad (Kagaku Tokusou Tai 科学特捜隊)or Katokutai (科特隊) for short.

Trivia

  • The title shows Shin Godzilla at first, making a joke since a lot of the crew worked on that movie too. This is before the name changes to the true title, Shin Ultraman.
  • At one point, Kaminaga is reading "The Savage Mind" by Claude Lévi-Strauss which discusses anthropology and human thought.
  • Zarab's name comes from the word "brother" backwards in Japanese.
