Important things that happened

  • Shunpei is seems with a stomach ache at the beginning (since he ate too much mochi). They establish right away that Haruto can't heal ailments with his magic.
  • Nitou Kousuke appears in town. He promptly collapses from hunger. He orders wieners to start a reoccurring joke of putting mayonnaise on everything.
  • Wiseman sees Kousuke and says that he's interested in seeing what's inside him. Wiseman sends Phantom Manticore to attack him. Haruto shows up (knocking over Kousuke's wieners). Shunpei and Rinko drag Kousuke away before he can do anything.
  • Wizard and Manticore fight for a bit before Manticore attempts to run away. However, this was just a feint to trick Wizard into running into his poison tail which stabs Wizard.
  • Eventually Manticore tries to trick Kousuke into telling him what's supporting his hope, but Kousuke evades the question. Haruto arrives and lets Kousuke know that the fortune teller is a Phantom.
  • Kousuke reveals that he is an ancient mage called Beast. He detoxifies himself and Haruto before defeating the Ghuls and Manticore and devouring their magical energy.
    • This explains earlier when Kousuke is mad at Rinko and Shunpei for interrupting his meal. He must have actually meant defeating the Ghuls and Phantoms and devouring their magical energy. He said that his "life is at stake", which probably wouldn't have made sense if he were talking about actual food, which is readily available. This leads to some insight into what the true nature of mages are.
  • Kousuke leaves thinking that Haruto is his rival. He also mentions that they're both competing to see who can devour the most magical energy, something that completely confuses Haruto.

Trivia

  • After telling Shunpei that magic can't cure wounds or diseases, Haruto says "Chichin Pui Pui" the spell from Shunpei's childhood book. It's a rather clever way of saying that not everything works like it does in Shunpei's picture books.
  • The first time Kousuke takes out his mayonnaise, it says "My personal bottle". It also might be a Den-O reference.
    • 俺、専用 - Ore senyou "My personal bottle"
    • 俺、参上 - Ore sanjou
  • At the doughnut cart, the label changes to "Itadakimasu".
