- Gira's name is derived from the scientific name for the giraffe stag beetle, Prosopocoilus giraffa.
- Yanma Gast's name is derived from "yanma" (dragonfly) and the scientific name for the golden-ringed dragonfly, Anotogaster sieboldii.
- Himeno Ran's name is derived from "ran" (orchid), princess (hime), and the scientific name for the orchid mantis, Hymenopus coronatus.
- Rita Kaniska's name is derived from "ruritateha" (blue admiral butterfly) and its scientific name, Kaniska canace.
- Kaguragi Dybowskii's last name is derived from the scientific name for the black hornet, Vespa dybowskii.
- Racles Husty's first name is derived from "Hercules beetle" (the Japanese name uses the Greek pronunciation, Heracles).
- Nkosopa is "pasokon" (computer) written backwards in Japanese.
- Ishabaana is a portmanteau of isha (doctor) plus hana (flower).
- This story takes place on a planet called Chikyuu, which is the Japanese word for "Earth", but written in katakana.
- Morphonya is named after the Morpho Butterfly.
- Akka is named after the Red Dragonfly (Akatonbo) and Usuba is named after Wandering glider (Usubakitonbo). Mayuta is named after the Sympetrum eroticum (Mayutateakane). All three are citizens of Nkosopa.
- Kuroko isn't a name. It's what Japanese stage hands for kabuki or other plays are called kuroko, and they dress in a similar black attire to blend into the background (the silly face is just for this series).
- Deznarok is a portmanteau of death/mimizu (earthworm), and ragnarok.
- Kamejimu's name is based on the Pentatomoidea (Kamemushi).
- Jeremie Brasieri's name is derived from two different spider species, Ischnothele jeremie (a type of funnel-web tarantula) and Idmonarachne brasieri (an extinct genus).
