Trivia
- Robo's high school memories are those of first love. Yocchan's high school memories are those of a delinquent. Most likely both have severely distorted their memories (Robo is constantly striking out with girls, and Yocchan is a bit of a wimp when confronted by school authority).
Episode motifs:
- Beliefs
- At the beginning, when Niko's mother introduces Ushimitsu-sama, we see the family is divided. Niko thinks it's stupid. Her mom and Kazumi-chan fully believe. Her father is skeptical.
- Robo uses various amulets to try to ward off his curse (wearing a garland of garlic, carrying a cross, etc.)
- Rei's group create superstitious fear over calamities that they create themselves. Much like a cult, the fear of Ushimitsu-sama has garnered them money, power, and influence.
- Even for skeptics and non-believers, Maki points out that the desire to have something to lean on is very strong, sometimes stronger than logic.
- By the end of the episode, Niko's mother is shown as not a loyal believer, but someone who jumps from one fad belief to another. On the other end, Niko's father goes from being a skeptic to a believer.
- The episode is not completely anti-supernatural, as it suggests that there is an actual spirit embodying Ushimitsu-sama at the end.
Series motifs:
- Robo falsely accused. Robo says he was accused of being a molester on the train again (Niko suggests that this is not an uncommon occurrence for him).
- Kazumi-chan's part-time jobs. here she is a teacher-in-training.
Uses of Niko's Power
- On the school rooftop, Niko uses her super hearing to eavesdrop on student conversations about Ushimitsu-sama.
- Niko throws her voice and pretends to be the voice of Ushimitsu-sama.
