Important things that happened

  • Houjou Emu is a 24-year-old pediatrics intern at Seito University Hospital who brings joy to his patients through his work and video games.
    • At the age of 8, Emu was saved by a doctor named Hinata Kyoutarou. Since then, Emu has aspired to become a doctor like Kyoutarou.
  • Hinata Kyoutarou, now serving as the current Prime Minister of Health, forsees a global threat known as the Bugster Virus, which stems from a certain incident that took place 5 years ago.
    • The Bugster Virus is a computer virus originating from video game technology that turns humans into Bugsters upon infection.
    • The only way to save those infected by the virus is to combat it by using the Gamer Driver and Gashats. However, one must undergo compatibility surgery first before using the Gamer Driver.
    • Kyoutarou assigns Karino Asuna the task of locating the skilled gamer known as "Genius Gamer M", who is a potential candidate for the Gamer Driver.
  • Emu chases a patient named Sota, a boy who ran away from the hospital. While pursuing Sota, Emu accidentally bumps into Asuna. Sota suddenly faints from a unknown illness.
    • Emu notices strange bumps on Sota's neck, which Asuna recognizes to be linked to the looming Bugster Virus. She takes Sota to CR (Cyber Rescue) for special treatment.
    • CR's director, Kagami Haima, orders Emu to leave Sota in the care of CR. However, Emu is determined to save Sota, just as Kyoutarou saved Emu when he was a child.
  • Despite Sota being affected by his illness, Emu takes Sota to the launch of Mighty Action X to cheer him up. Asuna is also there to search for Genius Gamer M, only to find Emu and Sota instead.
    • Asuna tells Emu that Sota needs to be at CR on time for his surgery, but Sota refuses to go back to the hospital. A massive Bugster suddenly emerges from Sota's body and causes havoc.
  • Taking the Gamer Driver and Mighty Action X Gashat from Asuna, Emu transforms into Kamen Rider Ex-Aid and destroys the giant Bugster in his Level 1 form.
    • The giant Bugster shrinks itself to the human-sized Salty Bugster. Ex-Aid upgrades to his Level 2 form and destroys Salty with his Mighty Critical Strike. Sota's illness is cured after Salty's defeat.
  • Asuna learns that Emu is Genius Gamer M.
    • She welcomes Emu to CR, a medical center that specializes in combating the Bugster Virus.
    • It turns out, Asuna is not human, but rather a game character known as Poppy Pipopapo.

Trivia

  • Emu's name when gaming is "game wizard M". His name "Emu" is the Japanese way of pronouncing "M" in English.
  • Asuna enters a code into the elevator buttons similar to entering a cheat code into a video game.
  • When Ex-Aid takes the cart out to perform the finisher, he blows into it. This is a reference to blowing into a NES cartridge to get rid of dust on the contacts before inserting it back into the Nintendo.
  • The boss character is named Salty. This might be a reference to the slang term since it means to be "upset". And the boy becoming upset seemed to be what triggered the onset of his Bugster disease.
  • No opening sequence in the first episode.

Corrections

  • 18:12 "Gasha Combreaker" should be "Gashacon Breaker" [Fixed in HD720 version]
